This antique tile from the Trent Tile Company of Trenton New Jersey shows a monk sniffing the flower of a potted carnation

It's made from a heavy red clay and the back is unmarked but attributed to Ruscha

The edges are glazed and the back has three in-mold raised feet so it can be used as a tea tile or trivet

The surface has a dimensional image of grapes and its vine and leaves. The glazing is very Art Deco in soft pastels. A pleasing and happy little object to own during the Depression, and fits into the decorating trends of today. It measures 5 1 2" square and stands 1" tall. Impressed Rookwood marks on the base. Excellent original condition.
